Film Equipment in Nepal

This page is about the equipment plan for a shoot in Nepal. What is worth hiring here, what you should carry in yourself, and what keeps that kit working once you leave the road, the grid and the warm air of a city.

Two facts shape every decision. The hire market is concentrated in Kathmandu, with a much smaller pool in Pokhara and effectively nothing beyond them. And distance here is measured in hours and days rather than kilometres, so an item that is a courier away at home may be a flight, a jeep and a walk away from your location.

We do not publish a stock list. Stock moves, and a list on a website is worth nothing to you on the day. What we do instead is tell you what class of kit is sensible to source locally for your particular job, what we would not rely on, and how to get the rest of it into the country, up to altitude, and back out again cleanly.

None of these are company figures. They are the fixed facts of shooting here, and every equipment decision sits on top of them.

Start from the two facts that never move

Everything on this page comes back to two things, so it is worth stating them plainly before the detail.

The first is that professional kit lives in two cities. Kathmandu has a genuine working hire market and Pokhara has a fraction of it. Past those two, there is effectively nothing you would build a shoot around. A remote location does not have a quiet camera shop you have not heard of. It has whatever you carried in on your own backs and in your own cases, and nothing else.

The second is that Nepal charges you in time, not in kilometres. At home, a failed body or a forgotten cable is a phone call and a courier. Here the replacement may be a domestic flight that only goes in the morning, a day in a jeep, and a walk to the frame. The consequence is that your kit list is really a risk list. Every item is a small bet on whether the film can survive that item failing where you are taking it.

Hold those two facts in mind and most of the decisions below make themselves. You hire the heavy, dull, replaceable things locally because they are cheap to source and expensive to fly. You carry in the things that define the film and the things that would stop it dead, because those are the ones you cannot buy back once you leave the road.

What is worth hiring here, and what you carry in

Kathmandu has a working hire market serving broadcast, documentary, commercials and a domestic feature industry. In general terms it covers mainstream professional camera bodies of recent generations, standard zooms and primes, fluid heads and sticks, LED panels and smaller tungsten or HMI units, basic grip, sliders, gimbals, radio mics and mixer recorders. Pokhara has a fraction of that. Beyond those two cities there is effectively nothing.

The real constraint is depth rather than existence. The item you want may be in the country, but not three of them, and not always in the mount, the firmware or the configuration your workflow assumes. A body exists here does not mean a matched pair exists, or that it takes your lens mount, or that it is free on your dates.

Carry in anything the film cannot proceed without and anything unusual. That normally means specialist optics, anamorphic, long glass, macro and probe lenses, high frame rate bodies, matched pairs, your own media and card readers, your own sensor cleaning kit, and spares of the small parts that stop a day. These are the parts of the package where a near enough substitute is not a substitute at all.

Hire the heavy, dull, replaceable things locally. Stands, sandbags, apple boxes, flags, basic grip and expendables are rarely worth flying. They are heavy, they are cheap here, and there is nothing precious about a particular sandbag. Every kilogram you do not fly is a kilogram that does not eat into a domestic baggage allowance or a porter load later on.

Hire here or carry in, category by category

A rough sorting rule for the main groups of kit. It is a starting point, not a ruling. Send us the format spec and the locations and we will tell you which side of the line each item on your list falls on.

  • Camera bodies

    Mainstream professional bodies of recent generations are hireable in Kathmandu, but depth is shallow. Carry in high frame rate bodies, matched pairs and anything the look depends on. Bring your own media and card readers regardless.

  • Lenses

    Standard zooms and primes exist here. Carry in the glass that defines the film: anamorphic, long lenses, macro, probe and any set you need matched. A near enough lens is not a substitute when the look is the point.

  • Lighting

    LED panels and smaller tungsten and HMI units are available. Larger lighting packages are thinner and worth checking early against your dates. Big, replaceable, power hungry units are usually better hired than flown.

  • Grip and support

    Fluid heads, sticks, sliders, stands, sandbags and basic grip are the classic hire here items: heavy, dull and cheap locally. Gimbals exist but confirm the specific model. Complex rigging is thin, so flag it early.

  • Sound

    Radio mics, boom kit and mixer recorders are available at documentary and broadcast level. For a specific multi channel or timecode workflow, confirm the exact units, and carry in anything unusual along with your own spares.

  • Expendables and consumables

    Gaffer tape, gels, batteries, cleaning supplies and the small stuff are rarely worth flying and easy to source in the city. Buy them in Kathmandu before you leave, because they do not exist further out.

The Kathmandu market: depth, not existence

It is easy to ask the wrong question about the hire market. The question is not whether an item exists in Nepal. For most mainstream professional kit the answer is yes. The question is whether it exists in the quantity, the exact specification and the availability window your shoot needs, and whether it will still be free when your dates come round.

This matters most in the busy seasons. October and November, then March to May, are the clear weather windows and also the busiest weeks for the domestic industry, for commercials and for factual crews passing through. A body or a lighting package that is easy to find in monsoon may already be out on a job in peak autumn. We check what you want against your actual dates rather than against a catalogue, and we put the answer in writing, including what the substitute would be if the first choice is not there.

There is a second trap in specification. Two bodies with the same model name can differ in firmware, in fitted mount, in recording licence and in accessories, and those differences decide whether a piece of kit drops into your workflow or fights it all week. A gimbal exists is not the same as a gimbal that carries your specific body and lens combination at the balance you need. We treat the detail as load bearing, because at altitude it is.

Where something is genuinely not obtainable in Nepal at the standard you need, we say so plainly and early, so it goes on the carry-in list while there is still time to fold it into your customs paperwork and your baggage plan. The worst outcome is finding out on arrival that near enough was the best the country could do.

Mains power, before you leave the town

Nepal runs on 230 volts at 50 hertz, which suits most professional kit and international chargers designed for a wide input range. The problems are not the standard, they are the sockets and the stability. Socket types are mixed, so carry a generous set of adaptors rather than assuming one type. More seriously, supply quality varies widely once you leave the main towns, with voltage sags, spikes and outright cuts. Voltage fluctuation kills chargers, so surge protection and a voltage stabiliser belong in the package rather than on the wish list. Treat clean, reliable mains as a feature of Kathmandu and Pokhara, and as something you plan around everywhere else.

Batteries and the cold

Above the roadhead, mains power in the normal sense stops, and battery becomes the whole conversation. The mistake crews make is to plan for battery in the number of bricks in the case rather than in watt hours consumed per shooting day. Count the second number. Work out, with your DoP, how many watt hours the whole package draws on a real working day, then plan your cells and your charging against that figure, not against a vague sense that you have brought plenty.

Cold makes it worse in a way that catches people out. Lithium cells lose usable capacity in low temperatures. A battery that gives you a full runtime in a warm studio can give you a fraction of that on a cold morning at altitude, and it recovers when it warms up, which fools you into thinking it was fine. Plan for materially more battery than the same job would need at sea level. Keep cells inside a jacket during the day, close to body heat, and in a sleeping bag at night. Charge them warm, not straight out of the cold. A frozen battery charges badly and can be damaged by it.

Then there is getting the batteries into the country at all. Spare lithium batteries are a regulated air cargo item, and the rules are not a formality. Confirm the lithium limits with your carriers, and confirm them for the domestic legs as well as the international ones, because a small mountain airline may treat batteries differently from the airline that brought you to Kathmandu. It is far better to discover a limit at a desk in your home country than at a check-in counter with a mountain flight boarding.

What altitude does to your kit and your power

A rough guide to how the plan changes as you climb. Sleeping altitude and cold, not the height of the frame, are what shape the day.

Off the grid: solar, generators and the watt-hour sum

Once you are past the road head, powering a shoot is an arithmetic problem you should solve before you fly, not a thing you improvise on the trail. Lodges on the trekking routes run on solar or micro-hydro, the available current is small, charging is usually metered and shared with every other guest in the building, and it will not refill a full camera package overnight. A lodge that can charge two batteries for the whole group is doing well. Plan on that, not on a wall of free sockets.

That leaves three sources you actually control: batteries you carried, a solar and power bank package sized to your daily draw, and, at the top end, a generator. Solar works but it is weather dependent, slower than a wall socket, and heavier once you add panels, controllers and the banks to buffer it. Size it honestly against your watt hours per shooting day and against the hours of usable sun your season and your valley actually give you, which in a deep gorge or under monsoon cloud can be very few.

Generators are possible and sometimes the right answer for a big lighting package, but they come with two costs people forget. The fuel has to be carried in, which is weight on porters or animals and money, and fuel can carry its own handling and permission consequences depending on where you are taking it. A generator also needs someone competent to run and maintain it, and somewhere it will not smoke out a quiet interview or a sleeping village.

The honest planning order is simple. Calculate the daily watt hours. Subtract whatever charging the lodges or mains realistically give you. Cover the gap with carried battery first, solar second, and a generator only when the numbers genuinely demand it. Most of the rest of the power plan follows from that one sum.

Protecting the kit: the four things that kill gear here

Dust, water, cold and impact do more damage on a Nepal shoot than any single failure. Theft is a smaller but real fifth. A little discipline against each one saves days.

  • Dust

    From roughly October to May the air is dry and dirty: valley construction dust, exhaust, brick kiln smoke, and fine trail powder lifted by every mule train. Change lenses inside a bag or vehicle, use rain covers as dust covers, and carry your own sensor cleaning kit.

  • Damp and fungus

    In monsoon, humidity in the Terai and middle hills is high enough to grow fungus on glass in storage. Pack silica gel you actually replace, keep optics sealed with desiccant between shoots, and do not store lenses damp.

  • Cold and condensation

    Moving kit from a cold high camp into a warm valley, or out of an air conditioned vehicle into the open, condenses water on and inside optics. Let sealed cases equalise to the new temperature before you open them. Patience here saves a wiped morning.

  • Impact and vibration

    Jeep tracks, roof racks, porter loads and cargo holds punish kit. Pack in genuinely waterproof hard cases, balanced in matched pairs so loads ride evenly, with delicate items travelling with you rather than on a roof.

  • Theft and loss

    Opportunist loss is the real risk, not organised theft. Never leave cases unattended in vehicles or lodge common rooms, keep a written record of what is in which case, and separate the irreplaceable, media above all, from the merely expensive.

Dust in the dry months, damp in the wet ones

Nepal gives you opposite problems at opposite ends of the year, and each one has a discipline that beats it.

From roughly October to May the air is dry and dirty. The Kathmandu valley holds construction dust, vehicle exhaust and brick kiln smoke, and the trails in the pre-monsoon months are fine powder that lifts with every passing mule train and every gust. This is a sensor and lens problem above all. Change lenses inside a bag or a vehicle rather than in the open, use rain covers as dust covers even when it is not raining, and carry your own sensor cleaning kit, because you will need it before the shoot ends and there is no shop at altitude to sell you one. A dry season trek that starts with a clean sensor on day one and no way to clean it is a slow accumulation of spots you will be painting out in post.

From June to September the monsoon reverses the whole problem. Humidity in the Terai and the middle hills is high enough to grow fungus on glass in storage over a surprisingly short time, so optics need desiccant and airflow between shoots rather than being sealed away damp. The bigger daily nuisance is condensation. Any move between a cold high camp and a warm valley, or out of an air conditioned vehicle into the open, will condense water on and inside the optics and the body. The discipline that saves you is patience: let sealed cases equalise to the ambient temperature before you open them, and resist the urge to crack a case straight off a cold flight into a warm terminal. Pack silica gel, and, more importantly, actually dry it out or replace it, because saturated silica does nothing.

Lithium batteries and air transport

Spare lithium batteries are a regulated item on aircraft, and the rules are widely standardised but enforced differently by different carriers. Use this as a planning shape and confirm the exact position with every airline on your route, including the domestic legs.

Load limits: what flights and porters decide for you

In Nepal the transport does not fit around your kit list. Your kit list has to fit around the transport, and it is better to accept that at the planning desk than at a weighbridge.

Domestic aircraft serving mountain strips such as Lukla, Jomsom, Simikot and Juphal are small, and their baggage allowances are tight and vary by aircraft and route. Kit above the allowance travels as cargo, which means it can arrive on a different aircraft on a different day, or not that day at all if the weather closes the window. Anything you must shoot the moment you land has to be within the allowance and on the aircraft with you, not hopeful in a cargo queue.

Beyond the road head, kit moves on backs and animals, and this is where weight turns directly into people and days. Load limits vary with route, altitude and season, and porter welfare guidance widely cited in the trekking industry recommends lower ceilings than local custom often allows. We plan to a written load limit agreed for your shoot rather than to a figure on a web page, and that limit sets your crew size before anything else does, because camera, grip, batteries and personal kit convert directly into porters, and porters need feeding, housing, paying and bringing home again.

Mules and dzos carry more than a person but need trail width and cannot manage some stone staircases, so the route decides whether animals are even an option. Yaks work higher and colder. Loads ride better in balanced, matched pairs, so pack in genuinely waterproof cases that pair up cleanly rather than in one awkward heavy box and a scatter of light ones. And remember that porters and animals move slower than you and arrive later, so anything you need on the ground the moment you get there walks with you, not behind you.

Moving kit: the transport modes and their limits

Each way of moving equipment sets a different ceiling and a different risk. Match the kit list to the transport, not the other way round.

We do not promise a customs clearance time, an approval, a repair turnaround, or that a specific item is in the country on your dates. Anyone who does is guessing or selling. Stock moves, rules change, and weather and geography set their own pace. What we commit to is confirming the real, current position for your specific shoot before you lock dates or a budget, and telling you plainly when the honest answer is that something cannot be relied on.

Redundancy, spares and getting data home

Ask one question of every item on the list. If this fails on day four at the top of the route, what happens to the schedule? Anything that answers the shoot stops needs a second one in the cases or a written plan for getting one to you. That usually means the body, the primary lens, the recorder, the radio link, and above all power and media. The cost of the spare is small against the cost of a lost shoot day at altitude that you cannot rebook.

Data is where redundancy stops being optional. The working minimum is two copies on separate physical media, carried in separate bags by separate people, so that a single lost or stolen bag never takes the only copy of the rushes. Make a third copy the moment you are back on the grid. Treat the media itself as the most precious thing on the shoot, because it is the one thing that cannot be re-hired or re-bought.

Do not build a schedule around uploading rushes from a remote location. Mobile coverage in Nepal is broader than most people expect, and you will often have a signal where you did not expect one. Bandwidth is the problem, not coverage. A signal that carries a message will not carry a day of rushes, and you can lose an evening watching a bar creep across a screen. Satellite communication devices carry their own licensing questions in Nepal and should never be assumed into a plan. In practice, drives walking down the hill remain the dependable route home for your footage, and the upload happens in Kathmandu.

Expendables and spares worth carrying

The small, cheap items whose absence costs a day. Buy what you can in Kathmandu before you leave, because none of it exists further out. This is a prompt, not an exhaustive list.

  • Your own sensor cleaning kit, swabs and blower, enough for the whole trip
  • Far more batteries than a road shoot needs, plus chargers and a way to keep cells warm
  • Surge protection and a voltage stabiliser for any mains charging beyond the cities
  • A generous set of socket adaptors for mixed socket types
  • Silica gel or desiccant you can dry out or replace, not a single sachet
  • Rain covers that double as dust covers, and lens cloths in quantity
  • Spare cables, media, card readers and the small connectors that stop a day
  • Gaffer tape, gels and general expendables sourced in the city, not flown
  • A written case-by-case inventory, so you always know what is where

How the equipment plan gets built

The order matters. Each step closes a decision before the next one depends on it, so a problem surfaces in pre-production rather than at altitude.

  1. Kit conversation before the schedule locks

    We go through the treatment, the format and delivery spec, the locations and the altitudes, and work out what has to be carried in and what can be sourced here. This sometimes changes the schedule. Far better it changes now than in week two on a jeep track.

  2. Sourcing, checking and holding

    We check what you want against your actual dates rather than against a catalogue, and we put the answer in writing, including what the substitute would be if the first choice is not available. If something is not realistically obtainable in Nepal at the standard you need, we say so rather than hoping.

  3. Manifest and customs preparation

    You send the full list, we build the paperwork, confirm the current temporary import route with customs, and flag drones, transmitters and satellite devices so any separate approval process starts early instead of at the airport.

  4. Arrival, clearance and physical check

    We meet the kit at the point of entry and handle clearance. Local hire is then checked physically against the list and power tested before it leaves the city, because a fault found in Kathmandu is an inconvenience and the same fault found at altitude is a lost day.

  5. On location and out again

    Transport, cases and portering are matched to what you are actually carrying, spares and a replacement route are agreed before you leave the road, and on departure the same manifest is reconciled so the temporary import closes cleanly.

The equipment and customs terms that come up

The words that appear on paperwork and in planning conversations, in plain language.

Temporary import

Bringing kit into the country for a shoot on the understanding that the same kit leaves again. It is handled at the point of entry against paperwork you prepare in advance, and reconciled against the same list on departure.

ATA Carnet

An international customs document that lets kit move temporarily across many borders on one guarantee. Nepal has historically sat outside the system, so the carnet that works for you elsewhere is unlikely to be the mechanism here.

Manifest

The itemised list of your kit, each item with make, model, serial number, quantity and declared value, matching what is physically in the cases. It is the single document that most decides how your arrival goes.

Declared value

The value you put against each item for customs. It should be honest and consistent across your paperwork, because inconsistency invites questions and delay at the point of entry.

Watt hours per shooting day

The total energy your whole package draws in a real working day. It is the number that sizes your batteries, solar and generator, far more usefully than counting bricks in a case.

Consumables

Items that will not leave the country, such as tape, gels, giveaway items and some batteries. They should be declared separately and honestly from the kit that returns with you.

Micro-hydro

Small scale water-driven power common in trekking villages. It provides limited, often seasonal current with rough voltage, shared among everyone in the building, and it will not refill a full camera package overnight.

Payload

The weight a helicopter can actually lift on the day. It falls with altitude and temperature, so a machine that leaves Kathmandu loaded may carry a fraction of that at a high landing site.

Customs, manifests and temporary import

Kit that comes in for a shoot and leaves again is a temporary import, handled at the point of entry against paperwork you prepare in advance. Nepal has historically sat outside the ATA Carnet system, so the carnet that works for you elsewhere is unlikely to be the mechanism here, and temporary admission is generally arranged with customs against a guarantee or deposit and reconciled when the same kit departs. Treat that as the shape of it, not as this month’s rule, and let us confirm the current requirement before your kit moves.

Whatever the current arrangement, the thing that decides how your arrival goes is the manifest. Every item listed with make, model, serial number, quantity and declared value, matching what is physically in the cases. Officers count, and a manifest that does not reconcile with the cases is where a hold begins. Build the list accurately before it flies, because corrections at the airport are slow and public, and they happen while the front of your schedule burns.

Consumables that will not leave the country, such as tape, gels, batteries and giveaway items, should be declared separately and honestly. Trying to fold them into the returning list creates a mismatch on the way out that is entirely avoidable.

Some items are simply not treated as camera kit. Drones, radio transmitters and satellite communication devices sit under different rules and different authorities, and they must be flagged before you fly, not discovered in a case at the belt. Drone permission in particular is a decision made by other people, involves more than one authority, and needs to be started early. Nobody can promise you a clearance time or an approval, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What can be removed are the avoidable reasons for a hold: correct paperwork, honest declarations, the right authority approached in the right order, and someone at the airport who knows the process and can answer questions in Nepali.

Your kit list is really a risk list. Every item is a bet on whether the film survives that item failing where you are taking it.

How we work

Repairs, and what breaking really costs

Sooner or later something breaks, and the honest planning question is not whether you can get it fixed but what the fix costs you in time and schedule. Kathmandu has service capacity for common camera repairs, and for a lot of everyday faults that is enough. What you should not count on is manufacturer-backed service for cine equipment. Specialist repair and genuine spare parts for high end kit are not something to assume are available here, and parts ordered internationally re-enter the customs process, which adds days you did not budget for.

Away from the city it is starker. Days from a road, there is no repair. The fix is whatever redundancy you carried in your own cases, plus someone in Kathmandu who can source a replacement and put it on the next flight or vehicle to you. That is a real service and worth having, but it does not beat geography. Getting a replacement to a remote location still takes as long as the journey takes, which may be a flight that only goes in the morning, a drive and a walk. We will tell you honestly what that journey is for your route rather than promise a turnaround we cannot control.

This is why redundancy is not a luxury on a Nepal shoot, it is the repair plan. A second body, a second recorder and a deep stock of power and media in your own cases are, in practical terms, your service department once you leave the road. Everything you can carry a spare of is a fault that costs you minutes instead of a day. Everything you cannot is a single point of failure, and those are the items worth the most thought before you commit to a location that a replacement cannot reach in time.

What actually goes wrong

It is rarely dramatic. It is a crew that packed for a city shoot arriving at four thousand metres, finding that the cold has cut their runtime, that the lodge can charge two batteries a night for the whole group, and that by day three they are choosing which interviews to record. It is a sensor that picks up dust on day one of a dry season trek and a team with no cleaning kit. It is one lens failing on a route where the nearest replacement is a flight and a day’s walk away, on a film where that lens was the look.

The other version happens at the airport. Cases arrive against a manifest that does not match what is inside, or a drone turns up in a bag nobody declared, and the production loses the front of a schedule that was built around a weather window it cannot move. Nobody can promise you a clearance time or an approval, and you should be careful of anyone who does. What can be done is to remove the avoidable reasons for a hold: correct paperwork, honest declarations, the right authority approached in the right order, and someone at the airport who knows the process and can answer questions in Nepali.

Nearly all of it is decided in pre-production, not on the day. The equipment plan is where a Nepal shoot is quietly won or lost, weeks before anyone boards a plane. Get the split right between hire and carry-in, solve the power arithmetic, build an honest manifest, and carry the spares that matter, and most of the failures above simply never happen.

What we need from you to build the plan

  • A full kit list with make, model, serial numbers, quantities and declared values
  • Your format and delivery spec, including acquisition codec, frame rate and who the film is for
  • Locations, altitudes and how you intend to move between them

  • Whether kit is coming as accompanied excess baggage or unaccompanied air freight
  • Whether any item is a drone, carries a radio transmitter, or is a satellite communication device

Questions

Can we travel light and hire everything in Kathmandu?

For an interview led documentary or a press job, often yes. For anything with a specific look, matched glass, high frame rates or unusual optics, no. The sensible middle position is to carry the camera, lenses and sound that define the film and hire the grip, lighting, stands and expendables here. Send us the format spec early and we will tell you which side of the line each item falls on, before it affects your baggage plan or your customs paperwork.

Do we need an ATA Carnet for Nepal?

Probably not, because Nepal has historically not been part of the ATA Carnet system. Temporary import is generally handled through customs at the point of entry against a guarantee or deposit, then reconciled against the same manifest when you leave.

Do not treat that as settled. Send your equipment list, arrival point and dates, and we confirm the current requirement, the documents being asked for and who has to sign what before you fly, rather than working from last year’s paperwork.

How do we keep a trekking shoot powered?

A combination: far more batteries than a road based shoot, disciplined charging whenever lodge or mains power appears, and a solar and power bank package sized to your daily draw. Lodge charging is metered, shared and slow, so never rely on it to refill the package overnight. Generators are possible but the fuel has to be carried in, and that has weight and permission consequences. Work out watt hours per shooting day with your DoP before arrival and most of the rest of the plan follows from it.

Can we bring a drone and fly it?

Drone work in Nepal is controlled and involves more than one authority. Civil aviation governs the aircraft and the airspace, separate permissions attach to the ground and the subject, and national parks, conservation areas, heritage sites, security installations and anything near an airport carry restrictions on top. Approval is a decision made by other people, not something we can sell you. We will start it early, tell you candidly how your specific location looks, and build a plan B shot list so a grounded drone does not ground the day.

What happens if something breaks days from a road?

It depends on where you are and what broke. Kathmandu has service capacity for common camera repairs, but manufacturer-backed service for cine equipment is not something to count on here, and parts ordered internationally re-enter the customs process. In practice the fix is redundancy in your own cases plus someone in Kathmandu who can source a replacement and put it on the next flight or vehicle. Getting it to you still takes as long as the geography takes. We will tell you what that is for your route rather than promise a turnaround.

How many batteries is enough at altitude?

More than the same job needs at sea level, because cold cuts usable capacity and off-grid charging is slow, metered and shared. The right way to answer it is by arithmetic, not instinct: work out the watt hours your package draws on a real shooting day, subtract whatever charging the lodges or mains realistically give you, and carry enough cells to cover the gap with margin. Keep them warm in a jacket by day and a sleeping bag by night, and charge them warm. We will help you size it against your specific route.

Can we ship rushes back from location to save carrying drives?

Plan on no. Mobile coverage in Nepal is broader than people expect, but bandwidth is the problem, not coverage, and a signal that carries a message will not carry a day of rushes. Satellite devices carry their own licensing questions and should never be assumed. Keep two copies on separate physical media in separate bags carried by separate people, make a third the moment you are back on the grid, and treat drives walking down the hill as the dependable route home for your footage.

Will fluctuating power damage our chargers and kit?

It can, once you leave the main towns. Nepal runs on 230 volts at 50 hertz, which suits most professional kit, but supply quality varies and voltage sags and spikes are what kill chargers. Put surge protection and a voltage stabiliser in the package rather than the wish list, carry a generous set of socket adaptors for the mixed socket types, and do all the charging you can while you have clean city mains, because you are planning around variable supply everywhere else.

What should the manifest look like, and why does it matter so much?

It should list every item with make, model, serial number, quantity and declared value, and it should match exactly what is physically in the cases, because officers count. The manifest is the single document that most decides how your arrival goes. Consumables that will not leave the country should be declared separately and honestly, and drones, transmitters and satellite devices flagged before you fly. Get it accurate before it leaves home, because corrections at the airport are slow, public, and happen while your schedule burns.
